A Proud Day at the Sunrise Centre

On Wednesday 25th March 2026, we attended the opening of two new linear accelerators at the Sunrise Centre at the Royal Cornwall Hospital – with the ribbon cut on LA6.

These machines (often called LINACs) play a vital role in cancer treatment, delivering highly targeted radiotherapy to patients across Cornwall. Having two new machines in place means care can continue to be delivered quickly, accurately and with the latest technology available.

The replacement of the second machine has been brought forward thanks to a £2.61 million award from NHS England’s radiotherapy equipment replacement fund – helping ensure patients can access faster, more advanced treatment when they need it most.

We’re also incredibly proud that the Sunrise Appeal funded £400,000 for innovative Hypersight technology on LA5. This allows for quicker imaging and improved image quality during treatment – and because of this investment, it’s fantastic to see Hypersight now included on LA6 too.

It was a special moment to be there and see this progress first-hand – a real reminder of the difference these advancements make, not just in technology, but in people’s lives.

A big step forward for cancer care across our region.

Janet Shephard, Trustee of the Sunrise Appeal, commented, “We’re incredibly grateful to our supporters – without them, this kind of cutting-edge cancer treatment simply wouldn’t be possible. We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to every donor, volunteer and fundraiser who continue to help us keep world-class treatment in Cornwall.”
